The Afars are a people of half nomads, which lives in Ethiopia, Djibouti and Eritrea. The so-called "Afar triangle" includes the geographical area between the Ethiopian high lands and the Red Sea. The climate conditions require a permanent struggle for survival. Heat of up to 50 °C literally turns the land into hell. Consequent drought catastrophies and crop dropouts continually eliminate a great part of the population. Constant droughts have killed more than 300.000 Afars since 1973. At the same time, almost the entire cattle population has been lost.
